Hadith of Jibreel
Translation: While we were one day sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), there appeared before us a man with extremely white clothing and very black hair. No traces of journeying were visible on him, and none of us knew him. He sat down close by the Prophet (peace be upon him), rested his knees against his, and placed his palms on his thighs. He said, “O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.”
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied, “Islam is to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayers, to pay the Zakat, to fast the month of Ramadan, and to perform Hajj to the House (the Ka’bah in Mecca) if you have the means to do so.” He said, “You have spoken rightly.” We were astonished at his questioning him (the Messenger) and telling him that he was right, but he went on to say, “Tell me about Iman (faith).” He replied, “It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe in divine destiny (Qadar), both the good and the evil thereof.” He said, “You have spoken rightly.” Then he asked, “Tell me about Ihsan (perfection of worship).” He replied, “It is to worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.” He said, “Tell me about the Hour (the Day of Judgment).” He replied, “The one questioned about it knows no better than the questioner.” He said, “Tell me about its signs.” He replied, “The slave-girl will give birth to her mistress, and you will see the barefooted, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing lofty buildings.” Then he departed. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “O Umar, do you know who the questioner was?” I replied, “Allah and His Messenger know better.” He said, “That was Jibreel. He came to teach you your religion.”
